MSc thesis project proposal

Ex-Situ Heart Perfusion (ESHP) sensor

The project involves many disciplines and is a collaboration of the staff and several students from EWI, 3ME and Erasmus Medical Centre.

A basic pH sensor based on a HPTS luminescent hydrogel has been developed already at EWI. Measurement of pH is an excellent indicator of the myocardial ischemia. This project aims to measure the health of the tissue in this critical period. This can be achieved optically  using a luminescent hydrogel.

Assignment

A basic pH sensor based on a HPTS luminescent hydrogel has been developed already at EWI. For a practical and usable sensor system there are still several challenges that need to be addressed

•    Processing of the pH sensitive hydrogel, 3D printing and mounting onto the sensor package.
•    Design of a compact housing holding simple optics, a detector and a LED light source.
•    Integrating the hydrogel, the housing and electronics into a small system that can be tested both in the lab and in-vivo.
•    Mounting the sensor to the heart and testing at EMC.
